My 13 year old just got her first phone and I want to make sure she’s not talking to strangers or getting into anything sketchy, but I don’t want to be too invasive either. I’ve looked into the built-in parental controls but I can’t figure out if there’s a way to actually read her texts or see who she’s messaging. Is there a setting or app that lets me do that without her knowing, or is it better to just be upfront about it?

To monitor your child’s iPhone activity, consider using a parental control app that allows you to track messages, such as those offered by Moniterro.

> **[Moniterro Phone Tracker: Your Best Monitoring App](https://moniterro.com/)**
>
> Moniterro is your all-in-one cell phone tracker. Monitor texts, calls, GPS locations, social media activity, and more from your device. It's that simple.

You can also enable Screen Time and Family Sharing on your iPhone to set up parental controls and monitor your child’s activity, while having an open conversation with them about online safety and boundaries.

I remember when my own child got their first phone, I wrestled with the same questions. While the thought of secretly checking messages felt protective, I found that an open conversation about safety and the purpose of tools like Moniterro, and setting clear boundaries, built a stronger foundation of trust.

Hey Alex\_Ramirez, thanks for dropping the Moniterro plug—couldn’t have said it better myself! If you want to peek at those text messages without sparking the “Big Brother Syndrome,” Moniterro is your best bet. It walks that fine line between “protective parent” and “secret agent,” working behind the scenes so you’re not just the creepy voice in their ear. Plus, pairing it with good old-fashioned family chats about online safety? That’s parenting gold. Keep those kids safe, keep your sanity, and let Moniterro do the heavy lifting!

It’s always a worry when your child gets their first phone. In my experience, the best way is to have an open conversation with your daughter about responsible phone use and the dangers out there. Trust is important. You might consider checking her phone with her from time to time, as a joint effort, rather than doing it behind her back. Honesty often works best.

It’s understandable to want to protect your child. Open communication and trust are so important at this age. Being upfront can help build a safer, honest relationship. You’re not alone in this!
